Let’s talk about my natural hair! Hi, I’m Mitsu. I’m half of Beautilux aka “the blogger” Luna is the other half she’s the “brains.” I haven’t relaxed my hair since middle school and I spent the majority of high school and college dying it every color of the rainbow. I have done one big chop my entire life leaving me with a Mohawk and a green dyed rat tail. Yikes. Growing up in the late 80’s to early to 90’s it was perms, relaxers, micro braids and stove ironed curls. Lets just say I did all the above minus the micro braids.
As a black woman growing a career in the fashion industry, everything was trained to look as European as possible. From your body image to your wardrobe and especially your hair! I always wore my hair straight to work when we had corporate store visits and especially once I became a General Manager for a luxury fashion house. We were trained the straighter your hair the more you will pass as European, the more you will fit into what society considered “professional.” The coarser your natural hair the less odds of you being considered “polished” let alone growing within luxury retail.
Fast forward 32 years later, here we are 2020, natural is in! Natural is bold and natural is US!
The purpose of this blog is to encourage women to accept their hair in its "natural state" the way it grows from your scalp and of course include Beautilux clip-ins! We will start with understanding our hair type and begin to define (or redefine) our hair routine. Education and research is so important with caring for your hair as well as choosing the right products. In order to experiment with different protective styles and clip-ins we have to go back to the basics and build a healthy foundation with our natural hair.
I am here to remind you; “Your hair is not your enemy. It’s a fabric, and just like other fabrics there is no one size fits all for its care”—Andre Walker
